Black-Ass Cartoons For Your Soul
Welcome to This Black-Ass Life! This week, we want to talk about the cartoons that bring us joy, make us crush (?) and provide all the needed laughs.
I. The Facts
Who says kids can have all the fun? A few cartoons we loved and love:
If you’re searching for an earnest survivalist fantasy, please look no further than Kipo.
Are we in our 30s? Yes. Are we listening to Gracie teach us about the days of the week and our ABCs? Yes.
Colorism aside (and that is a BIG pile of colorism you have to push to the left), The Proud Family and its spinoff on Disney+ still packs all the jokes. Do y’all remember the *out of control* “I had a dream” special episode?
One of my (Mitu’s) favorite shows on T.V. is Craig of the Creek. A show where kids in Maryland get to be kids in a creek having fun and learning lessons.
Shout out to Tab for teaching us about veggies and feelings.
The cult hit Fillmore! has a wild premise with a reformed juvenile delinquent in the titular character joining the safety patrol at X Middle School. Please. This scene:
The stars included in the creation of The PJs include Eddie Murphy, Larry Wilmore and Ron Howard. Y’ALL.
Did anyone else have several friends in school with actual real life crushes on bullying victim turned super hero Static Shock? Just us? Ok!
A special movie shout out: Speaking of feelings, do you want to cry uncontrollably? Watch Soul.
MESSAGE: We simply do not care what anyone says, Arthur, is a Black television program!
Why does it matter?
We need all the light we can get.
What can my Black ass do?
Enjoy a Saturday morning cartoon if you can. It’s good for the soul!
II. Other Things
Black-ass happenings
We lost a Black history great in Willie Lee Morrow who was credited as the first person to manufacture plastic Afro picks and develop the chemical process that led to the Jheri Curl.
May he rest in peace… and as a child whose mother was OBSESSED with the jheri curls until the mid-2000s, I’mma have a word with Mr. Morrow when I (Jumoke) get to heaven.
We would follow Viola Davis into any battle (we are not actually skilled fighters or people who know how to punch so please leave us out of any war!).
This Omarion doc about B2K 👀 What ever happened to boyband loyalty??
Method Man apologized to DC3 and Ms Tina accepted.
Congratulations to Big Sean and Jhené Aiko who are expecting their first child together!
Our Black-Ass song(s) of the week (Jumoke):
Sere is perfect vacation music.
Things we look forward to / don't look forward to:
I (Jumoke) look forward to watching more 227! Y’all, it’s on Amazon Prime! Yay!
I (Mitu) look forward to Issa Rae’s Rap Sh!t, like so so much.
lll. Text From A Black-Ass Parent
There are two types of families: those who check-in about regularity/pooping or those who don’t. My (Jumoke's) family is definitely the former.
Stay Black, have some fiber and watch a cartoon today. We'll hit your inbox next on July 25.
