l. The Moments
Remembering John led us to a trip down classic Black cinema lane, please see enjoy this stream of conscious list of beautiful Black-ass movie moments.
Remember Waiting To Exhale when Angela Bassett handled her husband leaving her for that basic-ass coworker like a queen? The haircut! The slap heard ‘round the conference table! Setting his things and that car ablaze!

Speaking of Angela, remember when Tina tagged Ike right back in What’s Love Got To Do With It?
Here is an underrated Black-ass moment in Set It Off.
Janet Jackson is forever box braid inspiration and her chemistry with Tupac is off the charts! Love always to Poetic Justice.

Oprah’s ICONIC “fight my whole life” scene from The Color Purple.
Unclear on the quality of Dream Girls as a whole, but THIS SCENE is everything.
All the tears when Nelson Mandela leads the “I am Malcolm X” moment at the end of the movie that should’ve given both Spike and Denzel Oscars.
I (Mitu) still laugh at this problematic, but wonderful scene where Madea calculates what’s owed in Diary of A Mad Black Woman.

BAPS is an underrated classic. Halle Berry is a flawless comedy actor. Remember the bidet scene?
Love as well to Blaxploitation icons including Black Dynamite, Blacula, Shaft, Cleopatra Jones and Foxy Brown.
Best Man and Best Man Holiday are both perfect. Enjoy their New Edition karaoke.

The wedding in Coming To America is BEYOND.
Vanessa Williams DID THIS! Watch: “The Family fucked my husband.” Soul Food was heartwarming and funny, and taught us butter is not quite all you need for a burn.

To add a recent film: The casino fight scene in Black Panther solidified our love affair with Danai Gurira.
Our Black-Ass song of the week (Mitu):
I can’t get enough of Bey’s Instagram story and the #BeforeILetGo challenge! Who knew she’d create such joy with this feature?
Things we are looking forward to / things we are not looking forward to:
I (Jumoke) look forward to the end of Wendy Williams’ divorce. We all deserve better than Kevin, even someone like Wendy with the hottest of takes.
I (Mitu) look forward to The Sun Is Also a Star. I read the book this year and shed real tears for teenage love. So excited for Yara Shahidi and the hottest Riverdale castmember who isn't Cheryl Blossom, Charles Melton, to bring this to life.
ll. Text from a Black-Ass Dad
I (Mitu) got this update from my dad who took our family dog to the gas station and met a stranger who thought our dog could talk?
Stay Black, thrive, avoid strangers at gas stations and we’ll hit your inbox next on May 20.
