Welcome to This Black-Ass Life! We needed to be gone for a minute, now we’re back with the jump off (this silly newsletter). Let’s talk about the husband. Let’s talk about what has defined 2024: hate.

l. The Facts

Haters really hated

Meg vs Nonsense. Something shifted with HISS, and we are firm believers that that shift ushered in a year of Kendrick crip walking all over that Canadian man’s dignity.

Kendrick vs Drake. We cannot talk about 2024 without talking about Kendrick’s dedication to hating on Drake. He showed us just how he hated the way that Drake walks, the way that he talks, and the way that he dresses. He took that hating to number 1 records, he invited a STADIUM of people to join in the joy of that hate, and he rode that hating into securing a Superbowl halftime show. He had people shouting “A MINOOOOOR” in the real-life club! Whew!
Everybody vs Diddy. Chaka Khan’s daughter, Indira Milini Khan, quietly hated on Diddy for allegedly yelling at her mother and sending his security to assault her brother. We also have Aubrey O’Day, who has simply never been quiet about how she feels that man treated her and her band, inviting people to question the whole giving back everyone’s masters thing.
Mitu vs Several Countries. Unfortunately, some very ugly things were said in my living room against the teams of Brazil, Japan, France, and any other country that played against the U.S. Women’s Soccer and U.S. Women’s Basketball teams. Sorry, y’all! Desculpe! Sumimasen! Désolée!
Simone vs Haters. Speaking of the Olympics. Simone Biles used her first post celebrating her teams’ historic success to hate right back at naysayers.

Kevin Durant vs Serbia. Sorry we’re still going on sports because you can’t talk about 2024 haters without talking about Kevin Durant coming off a major Olympic victory in one of the most beautiful cities in the world choosing to be up at 5 am hating people showing his former opponents’ love.

Jumoke vs Robyn Dixon. For years, Robyn Dixon has been a sleepy ass hoe on Real Housewives of Potomac, and I have wanted her off my screen. Honestly, the sleepy part was actually my favorite. But she lost me when she had us all defending a white man, who used R&B lyrics to compose 100% of his wedding vows, against the machinations of the green-eyed monsters.
New York vs Its Mayor. This indictment is one of the wildest reads of 2024 and people seemed to truly be WAITING in the cut to get their lick in.

Hating Ass People vs The Rest of Us. We’re sorry to bring this to your front doors in an otherwise hee hee ha ha newsletter, but real hate also won this year. People really hated a fool into ultimate power who is bringing a cadre of fools with him to the White House.

Why does it matter?

Hating can move mountains. People hate on hate, but clearly hating gets results. You can win medals, you can will your least faves off real housewives, you can set off alarms and start a path to accountability, and you can hate the very worst of the worst people into political power.

What can my Black ass do?

Channel your hate for good!
Remember to love on yourself and your people.

Things we look forward to / Things we recommend:

I (Jumoke) recommend seeing Denzel in Gladiators II! Did we cover our eyes for a quarter of the movie because of the gore? Absolutely! But bisexual Denzel in flowy robes murdering White colonizers (who colonized and enslaved him!) and causing their downfall?! YES! A- (the minus is for the anti-Africa line).
I (Mitu) also recommend Denzel and Gladiators II! Jumoke and I are now sports people who watch action movies. Know us!
